Magnus Carlsen's parents said, even as a child, he had the ability to concentrate on things longer than the average person without getting distracted. Anyone who plays OTB tournaments or analyzes their correspondence moves deeply knows that distraction free concentration is required for high quality play.
Cal Newport's successful book Deep Work states that long periods of distraction free concentration will allow a substance called Myelin for form around neurons in our brains that allow our brain cells to fire faster and cleaner. If we discipline ourselves to gradually increase our periods of distraction free work (at the office or the chessboard) this will benefit both our work production and our chess results.
We're all hardwired to seek out distractions from our work (and I'm very much among those!) but scheduling our distraction time i.e. emails, phones, social media etc. and our deep work time to keep these separate will allow us to work deep (including at the chessboard) for longer periods of time. I read this book last year, but didn't make the connection.
Better late than never I guess - 😏
