Blacks c pawn is exchanged for white's d pawn and blacks minor pieces are developed as in a Queens Indian. Black then allows white a central bind with pawns on c4 and e4 with the potential to allow black to achieve ...d5 or even...b5? Not play for the faint of heart!
BR's skeeter
Seirawan recommends the Hedgehog formation against the KIA. From what I can tell, the Hedgehog is: Pawns at b6, c5, d6, g6; Bishop at g7 and maybe one at b7; Knights probably at f6 and d7; King castles short. I doubt if all elements need be present for a position to be called 'Hedgehog.'
Disclaimer: I am a patzer, and anything I say about openings or about chess in general may be hogwash (or hedgehogwash).

he called it a Hedgehog Subway!
It seemed to work niceley. But the two local bishops had an arguement - one liked it, while the other said it was in the way.

It can be a good tool to attack the white king with queen going to e8 and h5, knight to e4. The problem is the c8 bishop blocked by pawns at e6 and f5.
Cheers
