That's the line I play basically.

If the queen goes to a5 (where it normally goes), how can you play d4??Also, c4 takes the good square away from white's bishop.

You play d4 after Nc3.

And then you also have Qe4 check, which messes up white's development. No, Idon't think c4 so early isgreat.

I don't think that the Queen move is very good because it gets your queen where it can be pushed around to easily. I think Nf6 is the best because it gives you more posibilities.

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. c4 Qe4+ 4. Be2

and then a later Nc3 pushes the Queen away. White's development and space are much superior to Black's. What's wrong with that?

IM Andrew Martin suggests this move in his Center-counter book so it can't be all that bad. And i've read books by Silman, John Emms, Lev Alburt etc who all say it's a solid opening choice for black.

Yes, I am readying a book by Silman right now about the center counter opening and he does give it good recommendation but I believe The Scandinavian has better options.

Be2???? no it gives up a pawn. not a good move. Block with the queen.

If black exchanges queens in this position, all he has to do is play e5 and he is at least equal, maybe better.
