Funny story I read in a magazine (New in Chess 2004/6) about the US Open. Thought it worth passing on.
In one section, a player had a mate in one. Instead of playing the move, he plays a different one, which still allows him a mate in 2 moves. He then (no doubt with a flourish) 'announces' mate and walks off. His opponent looks, sees that it is indeed mate in 2, but plays a move anyway. The guy, though, didn't return to the board and duly lost in time.
It had to be explained that announcing mate is ok, but you actually have to stay around to deliver it.....
