I just fininshed a game that'll end up in my collection of favourite games that I've manage to win. It exemplifies perfectly why I've grown to love the Bird opening... when a plan in the Bird comes together, it can be really, really fun to play white! 🙂

The game is here: Game 330308

In the end I've got a rook, a queen and a bishop in a kingside mating attack. The unusual thing is that the pieces in the attack, plus one advanced pawn are all unprotected, and all under attack! 🙄 But no way to stop the mate.... 😏

To balance things off, to bring me back from the clouds, I thought it best to recap the experience of gettin utterly demolished by Edmond Dantes: Game 334067 😞 Now there's an example of how to play against the Caro-Kann!

Two very good games there Phyrro...thanks for sharing. I liked the one with Edmond Dante better though, because both of you played very well in that one.

I ran that game through Chessmaster 9000's analysis, and it disagreed on only one move of yours and had a 100% agreement percentage with Edmond's game.

Anyways, if you have any more good games please send the Game ids to me...I like your style of play (especially with white)!

That's a good game indeed. Although I didn't like blacks' 9. ... Nf6. It is not bad, but taking on d3 is more obvious, and avoids having the rook on the akward h7 square.

I think the turning point is 13. ... Be7? That allows white to play d5! with tempo gain because of discovered attack on the queen. Qc7, getting out of that diagonal, and attacking Ne5 was a better move. Qb5 could perhaps achieve the same, avoiding the threat Bf4.

Thanks for the comments, and yes, I agree with you both that, while not as much fun for me, the game against Edmond was the game of higher quality of the two; I'm relatively happy with my play, apart from the fact that I got trampled... 🙄

I considered long and hard taking the pawn, but something about an opponent rated around 2000 leaving a pawn hanging struck me as odd... I suspected a trap of some sort. And after a LONG look at the position, searching for possible tactics for white if I take the pawn, I found this devious little line:

9...Qxd4 10.Nxf7!

Now if 10..Kxf7, then 11.Bg6+! and my queen is lost! 😲

I just have to admire Edmond's early play there - not only did he manage to hamper my development and develop with tempo, but he also managed to set up a nasty opening trap at the same time...

I agree though now looking at it after the game that 13. ... Be7? was probably not the best move.

In my game against dumbokie, I think his moves from 10 to 12 played perfectly into my attack - it felt almost like my opponent was forcing me to commit massacre on his kingside... 🙂 And I happily obliged. Of course I don't think he appreciated the gravity of the situation towards the end - getting the queen into the defense of the king by taking the f-pawn would have been an essential move.

I was not talking about 9. ... Qxd4 but simply about BxBd3. The 'book' move. Misunderstanding here ...

Ahh... now I see... and agree! I read your comment too hastily. Bxd3 would have been the way to go there. 🙂
