what's a good defence to white opening with e 4. I always mirror with my pawn and find myself on the defensive
Besides, regardless of opening, black does not equalize right away anyway so in essence you're always in the defensive mode for the first bit (some sharp gambits aside). Why not just build on the 1...e5 lines you already know?
Originally posted by gaychessplayeryes gaychessplayer dude, no doubt in praxis if black castles kingside the squares outwith the pawn chains (f7,e6,d5) generally can and often do become a target, the dark g7 square and the light h7 square in particular. for this reason i think that the Kings Indian may be used to good effect against the french defense, the board splitting e5 targeting the kingside dark squares. i have yet to find a satisfactory way of playing against the french, any suggestions most welcome, regards to you - robbie.
True...but there are other squares next to Black's king, too! 🙂

Originally posted by Eladaryes but its a two edged sword, for no doubt you are correct, but ones play may not be the best nor that of ones opponent and we may have a distorted idea of the strengths and weaknesses, plus we may reach positions that are unusual and non typical, how then are we to judge a defenses weaknesses or otherwise?, which is also further compounded by personal preference. the most i think we can derive is what seems good to us
The easiest way to find out a defense's weakness is to play it yourself. Eventually you'll find people who will show you how it's done. 😉
If not, you'll have a good position as black.
Originally posted by c guy1yes its very good, however, for me personally, after having played the french for some time as advised by a previous poster, i do not like the advance variation for it in some way plays into blacks plans. he would love that we advance our e pawn which can be attacked in typical french style with subtle moves like f6 and c5, nor do i like blacks plans of putting pressure of whites center with Bb4, for to me the dark squared french bishop is a very valuable piece, too valuable to contemplate exchanging it for whites knight, so you see the dilemma persists. but it was well played on your part, congratulations.
