Hi, I need to improve my endgame... I just lost a game because I am horrible inexperienced at the endgame.

Game 2194717

I think that I should have won this game, but I obviously didn't know how... I think that I should have advanced my own pawns instead of trying to stop his pawn advance... I thought I could trap his king infront of his pawn.

Anyway, does anyone have any tips they could give me on how to win endgames? anyone have any good websites with engame tutorials? thanks.

Black to move.

Here I considered ideas for Black. I then calculated to see if these ideas could be put into play. They could. And I concluded a win for Black.

So, what's your ideas in this position?

it seems to me your problem is tactical not endgame.
I'll give a short analysis from 21... at this point the material is equal but your position is much better.

21...Re2! great move put your rooks on the 2nd rank.
22.Qf1 d3 this is an ok move but in principle you should double up your rooks first. and you are taking away the important d3 square from your queen.
23.Rc1 Qf7 (better is Qb5 maintaining pressure on b2)
24.Be1 a5? this is a completely useless move you should have doubled up your rooks.
25.f4 Nxg4? you fell for a trap and you pay the price for your ignored rook on a8.
26.Qf3 Qxf5! sets up a discover check with d2.
29.Qxe7+ forced to prevent d2+
30.Bd2 (blockades the d pawn) 30...Kf7? a wasted move
32.Bxa5?? white frees the d pawn and should lose a rook (an immediate tactical win.)
32...c4 not only did you miss the tactical win but you ruin your pawn structure as well. (pawns are strongest when they are next to each other.
38...Qf5 better is 38...Qe5 to protect b5 and controls the important
a1-h8 daignol
47...Kg4 better is Kg6 try to hide behind your pawns
51...Ke2 nice tactic!
55...Qc3 much better is Qd4+ Rb4 Qb6the best way to stop the pawn is to blockade it with your queen while you promote your remaining pawns.
56...Ke2?? wrong direction you need to get rid of the h pawn and promote.
58...Qc5+? again blockade the pawn Qb7!
60...Kd2?? where are you going??
63...Qa6+ another missed tactical opportunity.
better is 63...Qf3+!
A.64. Kb6? Qxb7+ 65.Kxb7 Kxb5 -+
B.64.Kc7 Qf7+! 65.Kd6! Qf8+!! (now you control the queening square) 66.Kc6 (to protect the rook) Qe8+! 67.any Qxb5 -+
just calling check with no plan will get you nowhere.
65...h5?? kinda useless at this point your last chance is 65...Qa7 to pin the pawn 66.Rc6+ Kd5 67.Rd8 Qc5+ 68.Kd7 Qd5+ 69.Kc7 and you can just squeeze by with a draw by repeating.

important lessons.
1.Double your rooks
2.Blockade passed pawns (as oppose to chasing them)
3.after blockading opponent's pawns create your own passed pawn and push it. NOTE: if you can't force a passed pawn don't push your pawns wait until you have an opportunity if you push too early the position can become locked or your pawn can become too weak (it needs piece/king support).
4.always have a plan (no plan = no win)
5. look for tactical opportunities especially forks skewers and weak pawns, as well as opportunities to create a strong passed pawn.

You want to have your rooks behind the passed pawn. This goes for when you have a passed pawn and when you are defending against one.
14.Bd4 is a strategically mistake. The center is half open, so trading of the bishops does not make sense.
8. d5 is better.
For instance:
8. Qf4
9. Nb4 Nb5
10. O-O Bd2
11. Nxd3+ cxd3
12. c5

9. Bd2 I like Nge2 better. It keeps castle kingside an option, which could be safer if you lunge an attack on queenside.
9. ... Re8 I think d5 or Bc5 are more forcing. D5 forces him to move his queen, preventing him from immediately castling. 9. ... Bc5 10. Qf4 Re8+ 11. Nge2 Nb4 Black has an advantage.
11. ... Bc5 I think b4 was best He cannot take with the knight because you knight defends it, you can just capture with the queen and be ahead material, and after 12.Qg5 You win a knight.
12. ...Ne7 Ne5 is better.
13. ... Bb7?? after 14. Nb5 Nc6 15. Nxc7 Bd6 16. Nxe8 Bxf4 17. Nxf6+ Qxf6 18. Nxf4 and white is clearly much better.
Already mention the next couple moves earlier.
18. ... Ned5 Rc8 is better.
20. c4?? Better is b3
22. ... d3 Better is Rae8
The rest looks to have been covered.

Thanks for the great analysis guys... I guess my biggest problem here besides the missed tactical opportunities is my lack of a plan near the end of the game.

I think this game really shows what I need to work on, and that is tactics, formulating a plan of attack and recognizing how to win when I have a positional advantage...

Varenka: In hindsight I realize that my best chance of victory is not by winning the rook, but by blocking the white pawn and promoting my own. Possibly by ...Qd3+ Rb3, Qd6+ then Qb6 - blocking the pawn.

aginis and Xpofer, you provided some invaluable analysis that I will surely mull over for a bit here, thanks a million!
