Engines without an opening book

How good would engines by if they didn't use opening books?

Good enough I guess. Engines are supossed to be somewhat weaker in the opening but they would just take their opponent out of book (i. e. out of their prepared territory) and smash them through some tactical brilliancy in that unfamiliar looking position.

Would it give grandmasters an advantage against the strongest engines?
