Does anyone know of a free engine/database online (not openings) where you can input a postion from a random match and it will display your best option? I would be interested in using one after matches so I can spot where I made a poor move and where I alternatively should have moved to. Thanks in advance.

Crafty, Pro Deo, And Spike Toga are all good free options for engines. To get more features, a stronger engine, and a better GUI you need to pay for something like Fritz 9, Junior 10, Shredder 10, Hiarcs 10, or Rybka 2.1.

chesslab.com has a good one. I don't know of any others.

I'd download Spike 1.2 Turin, it's evaluation is highly reliable.

Toga plays better but it's eval is too computer-like.

If you want a GUI (graphical user interface) for the engines Arena is pretty good and free.

There are hundreds of engines available for Arena, which supports both Winboard and UCI protocols. Many of these engines are nearly as strong as Fritz, and a few are stronger than Fritz 8 (I've run only limited tests of these against Fritz 9, and none against Fritz 10).
