Hey, guys! I was wondering what is your opinion on the English Opening (1.c4), regardless of whether you play this opening or not.

defunct. useless. although it is a good way to stray away from boring play...

Being English myself I've got to say it's great.
er...How come there isn't an American opening?

the english is playable. i think it is just as good as e4 or d4. look up bottvinnik and learn his e4 and c4 pawn pushes and how the middle game is played. maricozy binds will be o so common when playing them. you have to be good at wing play and also korchnoi has great games with the english. probably the best to play it!

I enjoy the English and play it nearly always as white. It has a good winning percentage, too (slightly better than 1.d4 and 1.e4). You will defintely enjoy it if you play the Sicilian Defense, as the main line is 1. c4 e5, which is the Sicilian Defense in reverse.

Many of the all-time great players have played the English, including some guy named Kasparov.

I can warmly recommend, "The Dynamic English" by Tony Kosten. It will teach you basically everything you need to know to play the English, well, dynmamically. The opening used to be considered dull and uninspired, but it's reputation has changed substantially since the 1970's.

i have that book good for learning the variations. and gives key ideas. however there are a few chapters with only 2 games to one line. but then again i picked up that book and by the time i had read halfway through while playing opponents i had even beaten an 1800 player with it. whoever says it can't be exciting is wrong. i'll send over a game or two where i played it and won with an attack.

I suspect that Kosten was required to keep the book under 150-pages in length based on the page lengths of other opening books put out by the same publisher. You really can't have too many complete games in a repertoire book that is required to be that short.

I really love this opening and have had pretty good results, so far. Especially with the c4,g3, bishop g3 approach, Kosten suggests. I highly recommend it if you're interested. 🙂

On the opposite side, how would you recommend playing as black against such an opening?

How come there isn't an American opening?
What about an overextended attack with insufficient resources expecting opposition to give in, happily sacrificing pawns and small pieces so long as the big pieces don't have to fight. Strategically unsound and totally surprised when opposition fights back - gets bogged down in a drawn out inconclusive endgame.🙂🙄😕

English theory from the black side is ludicrous.

I'm starting to play 1...f5 just because i don't want to learn theory for a somewhat uncommon opening. 1...f5 can result in a Dutch after 2.d4 or if white continues in English fashion black can just play a standard Dutch or Stonewall and be fine
