The goss is that Karpov was unwell and indicated that he would withdraw from the Essent but pressure from the sponsors and the assurance of a first round 'easy' he continued.
The problem was no-one told Judith and she obviously did her homework better. Karpov has a history of 'incorrect play' when forced into the Petrov, even more so with an obscure line.
But take nothing away from Judith's fine play and she blitzed the tourney. Not bad for a girl

GM Judit Polgar v. GM Ivan Sokolov
Essent Chess Tournament
In this week's Monday issue of our Annotated Games, Bill covers a well known system of the Ruy Lopez. Sokolov shows early that he is NOT interested in the Marshall. Sokolov also surprises the masses with 13. ...b4?! Is this a novelty? Pull out your databases and look this one up!
A wild game. Two attacking tigers go for eachothers throat ! IvanH
