I love this site so much. So many words of wisdom...
last night, I lost 2 games (out of several, but still, shouldn't have lost any) against a much much weaker, I mean TERRIBLE player by ignoring their advice, eg.
When playing weaker players, don't go for the throat, don't try to bamboozle your opponent in a complex position (you might get lost too!); instead, play steadily and wait for a mistake - in fact, don't try to jump all over their first mistake, you can wait for another mistake to turn up. If your opponent is only a bit weaker than you, you may need to mix things up a bit, but generally the message is 'steady does it'.
I had a couple games where my thought process was something like "this guy can't play, I'll just polish it off with a quick mate and hopefully get to play someone else.
Oooh, this adds more tension and creates a bunch of weird tactical threats.
Oooh, this adds even more tension!
Ha! I've got a great position, I'm chasing him around the board, and if he does anything normal I win huge amounts of material!
Oh dear. I just put my bishop en prise. Oh, well, I've still got huge inititative, a bunch of tempi and many pieces bearing down on his weak position.
I'll just get that irritating knight out of the way by advancing the pawn directly in front of my castled king two squares to threaten it. It's not like he has a chance of taking advantage of the weakness.
Hey, this looks like a mate threat. I don't feel like analyzing it too far, it's not like it'll go anywhere. I'll just put this rook here where it threatens that important pawn and grab some material. After all, I'm still a piece for a couple of pawns down due to that little bishop boo-boo earlier that I'm pretending was a sacrifice.
Oh SHEEEIIIIITTTTTTTT!"
resigns...

I have altogether too many games like that.

meh. Speaking of terrible play, here on RHP, yesterday, I just hung two rooks in a row in two separate games. Both from positions with a big advantage and a fairly easy win...

Don't be such an optimist ..... 😀
Yea, no shit!
I just go through these periods... every couple of months, for a week or so, I forget the minimal basics of how to play chess and do things like put queens en prise and walk into mates and get my ass kicked by people of the "how does this piece move again?" variety.
Here's a truly horrible thing that I did earlier today, really fast, on an actual board. Probably the single worst game of chess that I, or anyone ever, has played in the history of the human race.
It was a lightning fast sorta of "hey, here's a chessboard" kind of a game, and I didn't even write it down, but I remember it VIVIDLY because of the trauma, including my whole thought process...
(PGN at the end if you want to see it in all its horror)
1. e4 e5
2. c4 Bc5
3. Nc3 Qf6
At which point the thought goes through my head "Oh give me a break. He's trying to put me in some damn scholar's mate? What an insult! Ok, it's lousy development, I'll just get an advantage by harassing the queen and develop with a bunch of extra tempo, and then I'll savage his damn insulting ass around the chessboard.
4. Ng3 d6
5. d3 Bg4
At which point I thought "Ok, he's really trying to force things on that fucking f2 square. I'd better come up with a counterattack.
6. Be2 Nc6
7. Bg5?? Qg6
Thinking "Why won't that fucking queen run away! This is where it's supposed to run away! And not thinking that I've just blundered my way into an exchange where he wins a piece.
8. Nd5 (of course, if I'da done that a move ago, everything would be ok...) Bxf3
"Oh shit! I just blundered away a piece! And I still haven't gotten that queen off my ass!" [Hey, I know! I'll panic and take my white-squared bishop out of the game and wreck my pawns by making another blunder and recapture with the really wrong move!]
9. gxf3?? Qxg5
"Counterplay! Must find counterplay! Must generate threats! Somewhere!"
10. Qb3?? o-o
"Ok, now all I gotta do is get rid of that queen
11. h4 Qg2
"AAAAHHH!! Now the rook! Shit! Run away!"
12. o-o-o Nd4
"Oh shit, I dropped another piece. All I can do now is sneak an attack on the king in."
13. Qb3?? (what was I SMOKING?) Rxe2+
12. Kc2? Qxf2
"Holy shit. I put my queen en prise?" Thank god he didn't take it. I'll make him respond to the mate threat and see if I can get the inititative for a change."
13. Qa5 b6
Ok, now I make the mate threat harder!
14. Qxa7 Nd4+
white resigns
