I'd like to find a small FEN Viewer program. Freeware would be nice. Something I could copy or drag the FEN from my RHP e-mails into and see the board in a small screen (maybe 256x256). It wouldn't need an engine or anything else. A PGN Viewer would be nice too. Anyone know of anything?

Thanks.

Winboard does both!

Plus, you might stop using fens.... You are able to load your game as pgn and back it up and play forward and that gives you time to remember what you were doing in the game before you got to this fen position.

Go Check It Out... be sure to get the right one for your OS!

Thanks Phlabibit! 😀 I forgot about this cool program. I can copy the FEN and Ctrl-Shift-V loads the postion on WinBoard. I can set the board to almost any size from "Tiny" to "Titanic."

Also, I tried your suggestion of copying the PGN of the game and that's better yet. But :'( I have to go first to RHP to get the PGN. It would be great if the e-mail notice from RHP came with the move as a PGN (e.g. techy's last move was: Qxa3). Even better would be if I could send my followup move in as a repy to the RHP e-mail!

Hey Russ:
1) How about adding the move made in the e-mail notice from RHP, along with the FEN?

2) Would it be feasible to make moves as a reply e-mail?

Not that I would stop going the RHP. But I like the idea the option of a simple small chess board to look at my game without all the bells and whistles.

Thanks again Phlabibit.

I don't know what Russ might do, but I think most people shut the mail off? I have my games list as a short cut on my desktop, just go there and see if I have moves.

I suppose you might be at work and can't do this, but I myself got tired of 12 extra mails a day.

I don't know if you have this file.... it is called the Encyclopedia of Chess Moves... Not a great file to hunt through to find a certain move, but you will find most all known openings!

www.riwire.com/ChessLords/PGN/eco.pgn

You can find it online also by doing a Yahoo or Google search, perhaps there are updates or at least info to read about it.

Should be able to save that to your computer and double click to open... pick an opening and check it out.

A good chess GUI (pgn&FEN viewer and much more) is Arena (www.playwitharena.com). It's just for MS Windows.

I found your two ideas very interesting!! (1); (2) I don't know... we'll see what Russ says!

PS@Russ: there are some very little bugs in the pgn (casteling, ...: see a very old thread of me) - is it possible that this will be repaired one day?
