Here is a 5 min game in FICS which was adjourned due to lost connection on the opponents side.
At the final position he has 15 secs and I have 33 secs. I may be overreacting or I may be suspecting too much, but in cases like this it seems that the opponent wants to get back to the game when he's thoroughly analysed the sharp position... I hate it. If my suspecion is right, it is not fair. You agree to play a 5 min game, that's it. (Unless they genuinly loose connection).
I then sent an offer to abort the game (due to my suspecions). No reply from CAptSpark (my opponent). Sometimes I even resign in such games... don't like to keep games in the list of stored games. However, while writing this I got this message in FICS console:
The following message was received:
Elvira at Wed Jul 29, 11:45 PDT 2009: Your game "CaptSpark vs. GuychRock" has been adjudicated as a win.
Additionally, the game is not in my list of stored games any more.
I have the following questions:
(1) What do you think of such situations?
(2) What do you think of my suspetions?
(3) How and why the game was adjudicated? I didn't request it. I only offered to abort the game.
(4) Who is this Elvira?
Thanks.

3) you mean adjourned? it happens automatically whenever one player bails out, unless both have noescape=1 OR you have noescape in your seek formula (which decreases opponents greatly).
4) +noplay elvira
I think it's a damn shame fics allows it still after years of complaints. once upon a time there might have been a slight chance of having an 'honest' disconnection, but these days it's 99.99% deliberate. same thing with laggers and harassers, just give them the boot on first offence, and 99% of fics problems would've been sorted. but for some unimaginable reason fics refuses to act.
the best option is to cough up a fifty and subscribe to ICC. the 5-minute pool etc. there have automatic nonoptional forfeit on disconnection, a tight screening against laggers, and you truly get rid of in-game harassers. 10x better than fics just for that.
Originally posted by heinzkattrue, when the lag is roughly symmetrical. be that as it may, a few milliseconds of lag is nowadays unacceptable, but there are players on fics who routinely lag 30-60s a game. whatever the reason, it's totally unacceptable.
FICS is often the source of the lag, not the players.
I've had zero similar experiences on icc in recent years. on fics you have a couple almost every session. it's just not worth the hassle.

using your fics credentials and you can request for a game to be adjudicated and the result that you would like to be there(not always the result of the adjudication is the same of the result you wish for)
2) the guy just blundered in a winning position and he got upset and quit
3) there are more possible things here: maybe the guy requested for an adjudication, maybe it was adjudicated as it happens often with very obvious games especially of the players that have many dissconnects...
4) Elvira is a bot that is automatically checking the adjourned games and decides upon the results for most of them. When the result is unclear for the bot I think a human will check them
