When I first started playing I dropped all the way down to the low 600's. I'm now pretty much bounce around 1 000.

Hopefully in a couple of years I too can be average!

Average is relative. I've once heard a GM remark to ChessBase that he's "an average grandmaster." I'd bet an average FICS player is better than the average chess player. Most chess players probably don't enter OTB tournaments (really missing out!) or play online. They just have a few games with friends and family. Thus, rejoice in being mediocre and elevate the group to which you're comparing yourself. For example, I'd hate to be average among the whole population but I wouldn't mind being average among geniuses. 😀
