Elo is a mathematical formula for calculating a person's rating, devised by Professor Elo; a FIDE rating is a rating given to a member of FIDE based on their participation in FIDE rated tournaments as long as they can earn a rating in excess of 1800 (FIDE ratings use Elo's formula I think).

The Elo rating system is a rating system which can be applied to different groups of players and different games. FIDE is one of the organisations which has adopted the Elo rating system to rate players.
