Hello All

Years ago, Bobby Fischer made a least of the top ten chess players up to that point (in his opinion).

For those of you who haven't seen it, I include the list here.

1. Paul Morphy
2. Howard Staunton
3. Willhelm Steinitz
4. Siegbert Tarrasch
5. Mikhail Tchigorin
6. Alexander Alekhine
7. Jose Raul Capablanca
8. Boris Spassky
9. Mikhail Tal
10. Samuel Reshevsky

For a brief summary of his thoughts (in his words), I refer you to either of these web pages.

I am sure there are many more sites with this material, as neither of these was my original source.

or

I also include a very funny joke made by another player about the list.

"He probably has not overlooked me at all. No, he has omitted me on purpose. What is more, I have the distinct impression that he has only given his views in order not to mention me! How dare he, the little brat!" – Jan Hein Donner (on being omitted from Fischer's list of the 10 greatest chess players of all time)

🙂

I
And upon asked about the omission of Lasker he said he regarded Lasker as a coffee-house player who knew nothing about the opening LOL!
He did reconsider later 🙂

Quick quiz - what do Fischer and Staunton have in common (something which they didn't have in common until this year).

In a related story, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Correct.

Both Fischer and Staunton never played Morphy.

(that's another answer to Fat Lady's question)

Can we do sort of a 6 degrees of seperation ( Kevin Bacon) between Fischer and Staunton?

In the Sergeant book, there are two games.

Staunton & Owen vs Morphy & Barnes 0-1 in 34
Morphy & Barnes vs Staunton & Owen 1-0 in 52

Whether they are authentic or not, I do not know.

I seem to remember something Morphy and Fischer had in common about the Labourdonnais-McDonnell match. I know Morphy supposedly annotated the match. Did Fischer annotate it as well?
This may not be correct. My memory of this is a bit fuzzy.

I'm amazed Fischer would even acknowledge Reshevsky's existence, let alone rank him in the top 10.
