Does anyone here play the French defense (as black)?
What kind of results have you had with it?
I read that it is a very solid defense and difficult for white to crack and I'm considering learning it.
One advantage is that you can get into it from 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 which gets into a familiar opening from both e4 and d4.
But it can be avoided by white, leading to some tricky looking variations.
Okay I will send you a game.
I mean 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5
or
1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5
After that there are a number of possible variations.
I will use an opening book for the first few moves if you don't mind as I would like to see how it's supposed to be played rather than me deviate after a few moves.
By the way, www.eudesign.com/chessops is pretty good for learning openings.
Originally posted by VargI used to play the French quite often, and I know redlentils plays a nice French as well. I'll play either side in a game if you have questions.

Originally posted by VargI've played the French all my life. I do quite well against players of my strength and weaker, although really strong players seem to bust me up fairly regularly. I like the Rubinstein Variation, which gives me a solid, but boring game for some

French is one of the most popular and dynamic defences after e4, apart from Sicilian. It is very sharp in many variations and therefore if one player is significantly better then he probably overplays his opponent so often. Black must play actively to avoid increasing pressure against his blocked position with less space available.
It's too hard to evaluate it in few words, but it you know it well you can choose, as White !, which variant to go to and it makes it very difficult for Blank as he has to know all these possible ways while White needs to know that one and go deep into it.
I enjoy a lot to play as White against French def.
Good book is needed both both sides π
