All You Ever Need to Know About Playing the French Defence (abridged):-

1. opening moves are 1. e4 e6, 2. d4 d5
2. Thereafter attack d4 as much as possible, e.g. ... c5, ... Nc6, ... Qb6 etc
3. When there's nothing else you can do to put pressure on d4 play ... f6
4. Don't worry about the light-squared Bishop - it will get some play eventually.

Have fun.

Watch out for white players who refuse to play 2. d4. If they play 2. d3 they are likely heading for a King's Indian Attack which is reasonably good against the French (or anything where black plays e6 early on)

Good point. KIA attack is quite popular at club level in my experience - although it's nothing to be scared of.
