Has anyone tried Fritz Mobile (the cell phone version of Fritz)? Chessbase has been pushing this lately, trumping on the idea that you can access the playchess server using it. My question is this: Is it just a portal for playchess, or is it also a stand alone Chess engine for a mobile phone like chessmaster and penultimate make?

Someone in my chess club has it on his PDA. We have used it after matches to blunder check games over a beer. It looks reasonable enough, but i have never played a full game against it so i can't comment on it's strength.

If it helps, i have chessmaster on my mobile and it can play well, but its very flawed, certain aspects of the game arent there, it gets fooled and makes misstakes which are obvious to me. im thinking maybe its worn out and getting crap because of that, but i think it just is lousy

Thank you both. I was already leaning against the Chessmaster program. The Penultimate (Chess 2.0) I had and got rid of. It has this annoying thing where it always promotes to a Queen, you can't underpromote. That's just unnaceptable to me. I was hoping that the Fritz program would be a little better, but I'm not jumping in until I hear some objective opinions on it.

well, fritz would probably be the best out of all the mobile chess programs, but i still think it would be flawed because it cant have every aspect that a decent engine has. my chessmaster downloaded in like 2 minutes, so unless fritz downloads for a long time, and takes up loads of space, it must be flawed. it will play well but do occasionally stupid things i would imagine, sort of inconsistent, eg only looking 4/5 moves ahead, not realising its falling into a trap etc. it usually takes one good move to beat chessmaster, so that will probably be the same for fritz

what kind of puny processor/ram do these cell phones have to run chess programs with?

The kind that lets you play a decent, but not great, game on the fly, for very little money. The added benefit is the color screens, which are much better than the LCD models from Excalibur, Saitek, etc.

Some chess games for mobile allow you to access and play the server AI, so it doesn't really require a great processor on your phone.
