I've been using Chessmaster 10 (good enough analysis for my level), but want to upgrade/switch platforms. Chessmaster has to have the disk in the drive in order to run...very annoying when using it on a home PC as well as laptop and when traveling.
I'm looking at getting either the latest Fritz or Rybka 3 Aquarium...so far I like Rybka Aquarium's interface better.
Does anyone know if either program requires you to have the disk in the drive in order to use them?
Thanks.

I can look up the link if you're interested.

But if you have your heart set on new software, then I guess it's not that important.
Edit - Here's the link to the CM10 patches. Remember, (for the US version) install all three patches in order (1.01 patch, then 1.02 patch, then 1.03 patch.)

Thanks for the link to patches Mad Rook, I'll put them in.
Now I might go ahead and keep CMX.
With a rating in the 1300-1400 range I hardly think I "need" an engine over 3000 strong.
EDIT: Awesome!
Just installed the patches and everything runs great without the disk. This solves my issue.
Many thanks!!!
Originally posted by xnomanxnoooooooooo, not the aquarium. trust me on this, aquarium has more detailed analysis functions, but unless you're not an opening analyst or play correspondence chess where engines are allowed, AND you're one of the most patient and stubborn people on earth, don't get aquarium. I had it, and was even eager to put in some effort, but I finally gave up in regret and uninstalled it. fritz's interface is much, much better. I think it's like the very first versions of linux, it had its pluses, but had a loong way to go compared to windows.

of course by fritz interface I mean the Rybka 3 interface by chessbase (which is only an enhanced fritz 11 interface).
am looking for a new prog too ...i had a novag star ruby ...which was ok ... but chucked cos apparently they are banned now for toxic paint or something... i think if your below bcf 120 then a good one around 180 is as good a practice as a pc that thrashes you over and over... wonder how cheaply you can get fritz and a palm device now...
Rybka looks interesting in how it plays (like 3000 elo) ... looked up some of its games and though they are too deep for me to get, noticed it controls the centre a lot .found one where it gave up 3 pawns against shredder to do so...

I'm not sure if you're looking for a dedicated unit or a PC program. The dedicated market has been stagnant for many years. The companies aren't making anything new, just the same technology recycled with new names. (I guess the Novag Citrine is an exception. Well, I think the chips are old, but the board looks nice.)
The PC programs are all insanely strong. Usually you just shop for the features that you want. And of course, there's the freeware chess software, too.
said someting a chess site about 'RSOH' ( i think) laws and that now it can't be imported anymore . i don't know if its the paint
but i think chrome 5 is one of the chemical banned and is red...

not the toxic paint police lol.... just read there are some poisenous chemical used in electricals and a few got banned recently ...
Originally posted by Wulebgrit's really annoying though, having to go looking through the closets for the disk. but it doesn't seem to occur more than a couple of times a year... I wonder if it stops if you replace the engine?

Originally posted by Black Star UchessOh, OK, the Star Ruby is a handheld. (I don't pay too much attention to handhelds.) I did hear that there's a fairly recent version of the Glaurung engine that's a free download for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

Originally posted by Mad RookFWIW Chessmaster XI doesn't ask for a CD at all - they obviously realised it was really annoying. Otherwise it's basically the same as X, but with a slightly nicer interface in some places.
