Someone played this gambit on me, and i decided to try it out. Were there any mistakes in this game?
Do you think this gambit is sound?
halloween gambit is my favorite opening. i know several of the main lines but unfortunetly my tactics still cause some problems partly because i move so fast.
anyways generally in a blitz game environment it is good especially to surprise someone who doesnt know it. the key is to keep pressure with white on black. (this applies to all skill levels).
in longer games it can be fun. if white makes one major mistake after the opening it can cost the game. keep in mind at lower and mid ratings it can still be fun but dont focus all your time on it. at higher ratings it probably wouldnt be done but there have been several correspondence chess tournaments with interesting games.
there are some people who have vast knowledge on this opening. one is over at gameknot . a couple years back there was a computer opponent named brause i think that played the opening and did well in blitz games.
after the main lines the following two lines follow:
5. ...Nc6 (in my opinion white has the better chances)
5. ...Ng6 (in my opinion black has the better chances).
(my opinion is just based from some readings and some experience in the opening).
anyway all lines of the halloween gambit are real fun.
here is one article about the halloween gambit which includes some notes and lines of the opening:
