Game 9 of FIDE WCC: Anand vs. Topalov

They just drew, 1/2-1/2

They're moving fast and furious now, I don't know how Anand can make any progress while Topalov's queen chases his king around the board. Draw?

EDIT: The game is finished! It's a draw. Too bad, a very exciting game all the way through...was hoping for a grand finish.

...and 6.5 hours later, it ends in a draw by perpetual check. Wacky.

I think Anand might be a little disappointed when he sees the computer analysis. Looks like Topalov's relative youth saved him today.

I can't imagine thinking that hard for 390+ minutes. They must be exhausted.

A totally enthralling and absorbing game. (a quick draw tomorrow is on the cards).

My head hurts and my eyes ache from staring at it for the past couple of hours

I'm taking the postion where I think Anand had a win and show it to the
bookies to see if they will pay up. (have to check it first after a shower).

I was dismayed to see people were actually taking time to post opening
moves to the Dragon and the Nimzo whilst this was going on.

Here we have two brilliant players playing live with variations that can be
calculated out tactically. A free benifical lesson and these lads are swapping
opening moves with complete strangers.

The words 'head' and 'up ass' spring to mind. I give up.

I believe I posted about the Nimzo while this was going on, as well as posting on the game. I would suggest the criticism is a little harsh.

If anyone finds a quote from Anand on why he played RH8, can you please post it here? I would like to know what his plan was with that move.

My guess is Toppy will play full out for a win, thinking Vishy is too tired from today's game to cope.

Was that around the same time Anand's timer dipped below 2 min? He was forced to play blitz-style chess for a few moves. At one point, he was making repetitive moves just to get time back on his clock.

Post the position if you have time, I'd like to see how it could have gone.

Susan Polgar thought he had it in the bag, but that he began to lose the advantage around 54. Nc4 - by 65. Rg4, she thinks any chance of a win for Anand had evaporated. She recommended 62. Rdd7 as the best continuation, a plan she says Anand completely missed.

Sometimes when I think comments like this ( and I do sometimes), I take a step back and remind myself that I am getting a little old, and that making such broad generalizations and sweeping comments will ultimately say more about me than my target.

Other people's approach to and enjoyment of chess often takes on different forms than mine, and more power to them. We do this for fun (as I remind myself after I unintentionally part with material, to my regret!)

If I were at the chess club or at the pub, I think I'd have fun kibitzing and BSing while the game is going on. Online, my laptop feed isn't fast enough to make watching all 390 minutes or so a fruitful use of my time. I also benefit from the wonders of modern technology, so I can get the results and the complete game almost immediately, so I can enjoy it at my leisure.
