I just don't get it, why is it that we all seem to have a glass ceiling beyond which our rating will not climb higher? Each persons is different, but we all have one. Why is it i can get a winning streak to last long enough to tip over 1700, but as soon as i get there i suddenly start loosing games? Is this my imagination or do people just start cheating more the higher your rating gets? (This is NOT an accusation, just a thought!)
It probably has something to do with how seriously people take their game. If you're a 1700 player, you're probably devoting roughly the same amount of time, effort...etc. to your game as most other 1700 players---there are of course, many exceptions. Therefore, on average, you'd probably all be progressing at approximately the same rate, thereby keeping each other's rating fairly steady (assuming you're playing against people who are roughly the same rating as you are). Does this make sense? I wonder what would happen if a player ramped up his/her effort by say, another 20% (more study) and played players who are 20% above his/her current average opponent. Would you be able to break out of your current band, and get yourself stuck in a new/higher ratings rut?
I reckon if i stopped playing at work, used books and databases and took more than 10 seconds thinking about my moves I could _maybe_ go up 100 points.
That really would be my glass ceiling & all the more depressing.
[EDIT: On current form I still fancy my chances against Mickey Adams, though...]

You tend also to play faster in the games where you know what you're doing and slower in the games where you don't - obviously you're more likely to lose a larger percentage of these. I'm in the same situation, briefly hit 1928 (which I knew was overrated), lost easily to a 2200, played a couple of bad games, made a few blunders and lost a few to quickly drop nearly a 100 points. The road downhill is faster than up.

Originally posted by pineapple42It's funny you should say that, i'm in 5 1600-1750 tournaments and my rating is as good as it's ever been. I find the problem comes when you are under-rated, start games against lower players, you win a few games and rise a bit but end up loosing a silly game that you started months before with a 1500 player and drop 25 points even though over all you've been playing ok. Playing higher rated opponents doesn't solve the problem though as you have lot's of difficult opponents and obviously loose more...It's a vicious circle 🙁
I think it depends on the types of games being played. Banded tournaments seem to cause my rating to plummet, whereas normal tournaments are much less destructive.
