I think the greatest player of all times are Steinitz and Capablanca.

Wilhelm Steinitz World Champion from 1866 - 1894 I think nobody can break that record.

Jose Raoul Capablanca World Champion 1921 - 1927 He was just soo ahead of his time it was unbelievable. Unfortunately he was playing chess when the World was shocked with two big Wolrd Wars!!!

I you shouldn't forget those players played chess without any computers, opening books etc.

The two wars were not the reason for Capablanca's relatively short reign. He was just not working that hard on chess, if he had worked as hard as other players he would have been truly unbeatable 😉 The second world war did allow Alekhine to evade all the challengers.
