No doubt we both made major mistakes, but is there anything I missed here in terms of blunders or quicker ways to get the mate? Chess feels amazing when it goes well, which for someone of my rating is not that often 😉

Until you really know what you are doing, chess is certainly a coin flip. Sometimes what you see pans out, other times it doesn't.

It was very kind of your opponent to move the c8 Bishop 4 times in the opening, and also weaken g6 with the moves ...f6? and ...h5? I think you did a good job taking advantage of the weaknesses in Black's position. Once you get Nc5 in, it's all downhill for Black.

you consistently played your attack. very nice.

one lesson to learn from the game is not to have a piece in front of the enemy pawn storm - 14...Ng4??

    Thank you 🙂

I realised my opponent was a good few hundred rating points above me about half way through the game. Felt myself hesitating a little more, but then thought, 'just go for it, so what if you lose'. That attitude seemed to work for me. This time.
