One more thing- Rueben Fine's basic chess openings book is one of the best out there. It's short, to the point, and the opening chapters are worth the price alone. Read it and re-read it; nothing will really suprise you after that. Best of luck!
For the uninitiated, the book that you are referring to is titled Ideas Behind the Chess Openings. It is considered a classic. I believe that Dr. Fine revised it sometime in the '80s or early '90s.

BTW, there is a recent book by IM Gary Lane with a similar title, but it is a repertoire book, not a general book about openings.

The World Champion Mikhal Botvinnik once opined that he thought that the best chess book ever written was Chess Fundamentals. It is one of my all-time favorite books.
