I generally just say "Good Game" when it's clearly over. Sometimes they resign, sometimes they don't.

Yeah "good game" is a nice why to put it. But i'm talking about the direct line: "you should give up."

Don't bother, chances are they'll just wait it out until mate. I'm pretty sure "Good Game" is the best way to go.

Actually this just happened to me. The guy told me i should give up. and you're right, now i'm going to wait it out until mate. I resign all the time, but when the guy tells me to resign, that just makes me mad. even with his advantage.

but this must have been discussed here before. i want to emai the guy the link. Perhaps it is poor sportsmanship to ask your opponent to resign.

Well, if you DO that then why the hell are bitching about opponents not resigning? Completely hypocritical.

I am looking for a THREAD that talks about how-- are you ready -- asking your opponent to resign is considered poor-sportsmanship.

Even if people are aware a thread like that exists, they'll just tell you to use the search function to find it.

You can't get much ruder than asking your opponent to resign, IMO.

my thoughts on this are-

it is poor sportsmanship to ask an opponent to resign, no matter what way its done in (direct or hinting)
if you cant handle winning for a few extra moves...well.. 😛

I'd consider it somewhat rude to ask an opponent to resign, and would not do it.

However, if someone does it to you, I'd just accept it as gracefully as you can and move on. You're not likely to convince the person they're in the wrong by giving them a lecture, even if you find some ideal thread supporting your position.
