Game 481136

the final position is just a little beyond me at the moment:

i suspect :
... cxd5
17 Bxd5

but .....Re7 seems to hold the piece, and the bishop on f8 can slide back onto the long diagonal so there are no mobility issues

- ahh i just spotted :
17 Rf6 followed by 18 Rd6 and of course 19 Bxd7 regaining the piece with heaps of extra little pawnies for white

mmmmm any thoughts?

Black resigned too early.

Not sure that 16 .. cxb5 (not d5) is the best. But if black does take, then white should NOT play Bxb5 because then black simply plays Qc7 and he is a piece up for a pawn, still with some care to be taken on f7. Instead, after cxb5, Qd5! with double attack on f7 and rook a8. For instance: Rb8 then Rxf7 with strong attack for white.

However, black can decide not to take the knight, but keep d5 covered with the c6-pawn and play 16. ... Bc5 or Re6. He is a pawn down, but white's pluspawn is a doublepawn on the e-file. White is better, but still a lot to play.

nicely illuminating - thankyou very much 🙂

p.s. i presume "(not d5)" was meant to indicate the loss of protection of the d5 square

I think it is because you wrote in your posting: "i suspect ... cxd5"
instead of cxb5
