Sorry to be a bore but could someone explain how FENs work to me please?

I assume they can be used to search databases to see whether anyone else has recorded a game with the same position?

Thanks in advance.

Click the "Help me!" link in the top right hand corner (ish) of your screen, followed by "pop-up help files", followed by "faq" and then information on FENs can be found under no. 8.

The FEN for a given position can be found under 'game details'. It can be copied and pasted into Chessbase or some other chess software to allow you to set up the position and play around with prospective moves/lines.

There is no way of searching through all the games played on RHP for games with a certain FEN, but yep, you can do it for a database that you yourself have.

Any other questions then ask away!

Thanks. Does anybody know of decent websites where you can use the fens to set up a position or any online databases that could be searched by using the fen from a game?

I would like to see what other players have done in some of the positions that I muddle in to.

I don't know if you can use fens, but you can set up the board at www.chesslab.com and search a large database of games using that.

I have just spent some time on chesslab. It is an excellent facility - thankyou.

If anyone else has a tip on where to search other databases then please let me (and everyone else) know.

www.chessbase.com has probably the best (i.e. highest quality of games) database on the web.
