If someone makes a move I haven't seen before in an opening, I sometimes scramble for a book or search a database to see if it has been played before. I really wonder if there are any high rated players on RHP who don't do that. In other words, they rely only on their own resources and maintain a high rating for a long stretch of time. My guess is not too many do. I'm willing to bet most of the best players have a pretty good library or database/s they refer to, whereas the lower rated players just play off the top of their heads, without much consideration. In the old days, successful correspondence players had huge libraries to refer to. One I knew had books and magazines in a variety of languages and managed to find all this useful by learning a few words. So, am I correct in assuming most high rated players have some kind of stored information to refer to?
