How do I improve my midgame

I usually come out ahead in openings but end up losing it in the midgame. Does anyone know of any sites that would help improve your midgame? I don't especially like books.

How do you know that you are ahead in the opening?

Take a coach. Then again, if you are not interested enough to spend your money that way, try to read some good middlegame book. Or pass through interactive Chessmaster Academy, strategy section...

Just my few thoughts...

Tactics.
Get a book on tactics or find a site specialising in tactics. Learning strategy is difficult without the tactical options in your armoury. You will get a big rating hit by covering the basic tactical themes. Many good books.

ie.
1) Pins 2) Forks 3) Skewers 4) Overloading 5) Removal of defence 6) Interception 7) Passed pawns / promotion 8) Back rank mating threats 9) Intermediate (waiting) moves... the list goes on.

Get an understanding of these, and your middlegame strategy will improve no end.

I think you need to overcome your aversion to books!

I tend to be up a pawn or have more pieces developed.

I don't mind the books; however, I'm looking for a good site I can access throughout the day at work or at home when I have a few minutes here and there to kill.

".....when I have a few minutes here and there to kill."

You won't learn anything by a few minutes study here and there.

Simple Chess by Stean is a good book for the middle game.

But you will only get out of it what you put into it.

I've read and have heard some excellent reports about the
Bangiev book. But...The lad did say time was premium.

To get the best of out the Bangiev book it will require time and
effort. (I've not read it - but looked at it. You won't see that
off in weekend).

Stean's book - with the terrible title 'Simple Chess'.
Is lighter but very well written and puts you on the
right path what to look for in the middle game.

The title is was meant to say - 'look positional chess
is simple.' But people think it's a beginners book
and never even look at it.

It really is a minor classic and is always mentioned in these
best chess books polls that magazines run from time to time
as space fillers.

It's the second diagram in the book and the bold statement.

Black is Lost!

Eh? There is no tactics here. (My first thought), my second
thought was Black is better. I can attack the weakened King.

Then Stean shows you how the game went with wonderful clear
simple notes.

He is right - Black is lost (Black to play by the way).

I have a spare copy....

Is black lost because of his bad bishop and knight that can't move because of his pawns?

You are on the ball. Also look at the good squares
available for the White Knight.

it's from a Botvinnik game played in the 60's.
Black played Ne8 and White replied Nc4.

you ,ost likely find the game on a DB.
I cannot recall the opponent's name.
It makes quite an impression. LAter tonight when I get
home - I'll the rest of the moves. (just to be complete).

Nc4 would probably be the best move for white.
