When I reached a respectable rating I challenged everyone who beat me from bottom to top. I quit after about 7 games. I said what is the point? I am at a high level and without losing those games I would not have learned to get where I am today. As fischer said one day you give your opponent a lesson and the next day he gives you one thats what its all about.

like that v a 1400 player?
I've played over the games.
You saw his grade and clocked up 2 losses in your mind before the first
pawn was pushed. Your White opening had the look of a rabbit caught
in headlights.
Valuable lesson here - do not under estimate yourself and
over estimate your opponent. The higher graded player does
not get extra pieces or extra moves.
Did you look at his games and see what opening he plays?
I do and have done v most opponents I've played on here.
(The Bishops opening as White and the French as Black.)
You could have followed a main line and got into a middle game
with even chances.
OK the chances are you would still lose. His experience in the coming
positions coupled with the fact he is not too bad a player would
have seen to that.
But at the end of the game you will learned two main lines - there is
nothing better than playing to study an opening.
And what to do and how to play these middle game positions.
As it is you let the chance slip by....
