How do i work threefold repetition?!

Having been forced to draw by this rule I really would like to learn how to use it. Is it the same 12 succesive half moves (creating the same table 3 times in a row) that gets the draw, or can it happen with any 3 random positions within the game (say move 3 has the same table as moves 11 and 14). Any help in understanding would be great!

if the same position occurs 3 times in the game, it's a draw. it doesn't have to be consecutive but it usually is.
