I heard some time that Kasparov said he knows about (or more than) 8,500 opening variations.
I can say that I wouldn't be able to spurt all those out on you spontaneously. My lack of opening knowledge shows in that I wouldn't be able to give any educated guess of number of openings that I know. (hmm)
Similar to Guych's thread:
1) How many openings do you know?
2) Is there any target for number of opening variations to know?
3) What is (are) the source(s) of your openings?
4) How do you "store" a new opening variation in your head?
5) How do you practice the openings?
6) How do you make sure your brain doesn't forget?
Well, something like this - I'm curious to hear reactions!

Your brain never forgets.
You can say the 1% of chess that is not tactics (Teichmann) does not matter - but the tactical pattern recognition stuff, I've learned enough of it. We're talking about "raw openings" here.
I am sure I could memorize a lot of variations, but never really got to doing it efficiently.
Originally posted by heinzkat1)as white, I only know some very specific lines of the English. I'm not sure of the names, but it always includes an early fianchetto of the light coloured bishop. and I mean it, I have practically no idea whatsoever about any other openings. my repertuare wouldn't exceed the first 3-4 moves of 1.e4, and probably 2-3 moves with 1.d4. Maybe with systems like the KIA, London, or Reti (altough it's not exactly a system), I could play 5 moves without any analysis, but that's all.

I simply get so overwhelmed by even watching any KG or sharp sicilian games. The traxler, fried liver attack, god forbid.
as black, against e4, again, I only know the french, and all the statements above would apply, I have no idea whatsoever about any other.
against d4, well actually I don't even know the names of the openings in my repertuare, but one of them I know is the Nimzo-indian.
against c4 I'm supposed to know the symmetrical English, but I don't really know much about it from the black side.
2)I don't know, but I kind of have a half-or 3/4s of a complete repertuare I have to memorize.
3)basically very, very strict lines which have exactly one move against any move as long as we are in my repertuare.
4)looking at several number of lines, than trying to reconstruct them all by my own.
5) #4
6) it does forget.

Well, something like this - I'm curious to hear reactions!
2) Since I've been using same opennings for a year or so, I don't have any targets at the moment.
3) Actually I learned the opennings from different videos about the opennings.
4) That's a problem 🙂
5) Only in the games.
6) That's a problem as well.
