I liked how you sac'd the queen so you could mate with the lone bishop instead of the reverse... You have a sense of style about you...

No, I'm just kidding. That was kind of tricky. And hey, you'll probably never fall for that one again. And at least you had the honor to post it, and the ability to laugh at yourself.

It was over as soon as you played Nc3. Nf3 is mandatory at that stage of the From (g3 has been tried a dozen times with little success). After that there are still plenty of pitfalls to watch for.
I suggest tmetzler's From Gambit challenge as required reading for anyone playing the white side of the Bird.

Freddie did send me a from gambit game right after this thread was created..

He played the black side quite well: Game 1133052

I'm assuming that that game is drawn for reasons not related to the position.

Take your pick:

1. Positive Reinforcement...From the little I've played freddie, I feel he could up his rating by at least 200 pts if he studied/practiced/spent more time on his endgame.

2. for laughs

3. I wasn't quite ready to break 1600

4. I like being underrated

5. I didn't want to risk getting bumped up another level in any upcoming banded tournaments 🙂

6. Hell, they're only rating points

Like I said, he played surprisingly well.

Why not play into the king's gambit at the beginning?

You can and I know players who do. However if white is confident in his ability to navigate the minefield that is the From then he can do rather well. The King's Gambit is considered a shaky opening even by all but it's most fervent supporters.

looks to me like your main mistake was just playing the wrong knight, the other knight out stops the check. If the bish then attacks said knight, protect with queen, if bish takes, queen takes and you cover g3 if the guy checks.

Kings gambit is great for blitz however. Maybe not so hot for long games. I wonder if there is much correspondence play in the KG?
That would certainly be suspicious if you find little in the way of KG there.
