I few weeks ago, my ICC rating was 1603. Now it's just over 1400. Same thing on here. I went from about 1550 to about 1350 in just a few weeks. Has anyone found themself in a similar slump and found effective ways to turn things around?

Well, I'm not nearly as good... but fewer games, and play a few people rated even with your current rating... sounds like you just need a confidence boost... once you get back to your previous rating, play significantly higher rated people to improove your game... works for me...

My rating drop wasn't quite as dramatic (and less dramatic than I had anticipated), but it was a somewhat similar situation, and I found some of the tips I got really helpful. Probably the most important thing was to take it easy for a while, not playing too many games and not moving faster than I had to or felt like (I didn't have much time to play chess for a while either, which probably wasn't bad). Currently I am playing an unrated instructive game, and I am training tactics at http://chess.emrald.net/index.php .

I went down about 250-300 points lower than the rating I should have, climbing a little bit back now. But in my case it is due to too many games. Once that goes down, the rating should go up. Maybe you are playiing too many games too?

At blitz (ICC) my game fluctuates wildly between 1300's and 1500's. I think that's to be expected in blitz. The way i try to see it is, even though my rating goes down i haven't changed as a player, i haven't really gotten worse. In blitz, play for enjoyment and try to eliminate stupid mistakes, like dropping pieces and pawns, which occurs frequently at this level. On RHP my rating has dropped about a hundred points due to the sheer number of games i have played. My optimum level is in the 20's and i have been playing 50+. When that happens, i don't think more than a few seconds and it has cost me, but it's all in the game.

Thanks everybody. I won 2 games on ICC last night, so maybe I'm on the right track. Nordlys, I liked that thread. Particularly the part where you said that if you lose all the time to really strong players, you kind of lose your motivation. It's the same for me. I take lessons from this guy who wants me playing people who are 100-150 points above me. All that does is discourage me when I get crushed over and over again. I agree that you can learn from games where you can make a small error, but it doesn't necessarily cost you the game. Besides that, it's more fun. 🙂

I kind of agree. I feel exhausted after finishing a 1/3 league and the last thing I want to do is play chess. Take time out and stop playing for a few days. And what the heck am I doing even reading these forums? Total break.
