One huge middlegame blunder (10...Nxe3) and walking into a mate-in-two (13...Be7). Ouch.

Version 5 was written to eliminate spaghetti code, but I still don't care for the engine. It has no configuration file, so all the switches have to be put on the command line. And the engine seems to be very fussy about accepting the switches: I haven't been able to get the depth switch to work at all in Arena.
So what you are saying is that GnuChess is still crap?
So for me, GnuChess is trapped in limbo land - Not strong enough to be a top engine, yet I haven't been able to "dumb it down" so I can play against it. For me, there are better engine choices for playing dumbed-down chess.
Originally posted by Darax The GoodMaybe usually, but not necessarily. There are some free engines/GUIs that fill my basic needs. Commercial products may deliver extra strength or features, but if you don't need the extras, then it makes no sense to pay money for those things.
you get what you pay for.
Even among the free engines, some are better than others in terms of strength, features, or bugginess. If I can find a free engine/GUI that I'm happy with, then I think I've gotten more than I paid for. π
