It had to be running in an "easy" mode. Either that, or it has a critical bug.

One huge middlegame blunder (10...Nxe3) and walking into a mate-in-two (13...Be7). Ouch.

GNU is white and aamir is black. Simples. He wanted to show us his defeat by claiming he actually won it. Bad boy aamir.

I wonder if the OP will be back. It has the look of a one-time hit-and-run post.

GnuChess is what it is: a 2400-ish engine with a buggy reputation in the past (hopefully getting better?). Version 5 was written to eliminate spaghetti code, but I still don't care for the engine. It has no configuration file, so all the switches have to be put on the command line. And the engine seems to be very fussy about accepting the switches: I haven't been able to get the depth switch to work at all in Arena.

So for me, GnuChess is trapped in limbo land - Not strong enough to be a top engine, yet I haven't been able to "dumb it down" so I can play against it. For me, there are better engine choices for playing dumbed-down chess.

Maybe usually, but not necessarily. There are some free engines/GUIs that fill my basic needs. Commercial products may deliver extra strength or features, but if you don't need the extras, then it makes no sense to pay money for those things.

Even among the free engines, some are better than others in terms of strength, features, or bugginess. If I can find a free engine/GUI that I'm happy with, then I think I've gotten more than I paid for. πŸ™‚
