Can someone please explain to me why after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5 white would play Nb5. Essentially white is saying that after 5. ...d6 6. N1c3 a6 7. Na3 he'd rather have his knight on a3 then any of his other possibilities. This doesn't make sense to me, someone please tell me why, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's not really that white is psyched to have the knight on a3 but more that white has forced a concession from black.

Look at the resulting black pawn structure...he has a backward d pawn which can be annoying in this line.

White doesn't have to go to a3 yet, as white's QN hasn't been developed. He could go to c3 and develop the QN somewhere else. Kinda clumsy, but black is saddled with that d6 pawn for a long time too.
