The Vienna game

Game 4262664

Black had to play very accurate here and personally I take pride in finding all those wonderfull moves. Annotations would be greatly appreciated.

...If I ever become good enough and Korch is still on this site I am going to beat him with this opening.

Edit: I am sure that rubber boy will try to critique it in some way.

Doesn't matter if you can beat a Latvian Gambit player. Only when you defeat the Latvian is when you can say you can beat a Latvian Gambit player.

I'll send a rated game over right now. First moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5

Anything else and the game will be deleted.

It also avoids the Petroff. I like it quite a lot, and I find it mostly leads to comfortable positions for white. Really the only position I don't like to play with it is in the 3.f4 line after black's played 2...Nf6, ie: 1.e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4. fxe5 Nxe4 and it just seems like black has equalized already. The white pawn on e5 is a thematic idea of the 3. f4 line but here it is very weak while black's Ne4 is a monster. But white has other options, like 3.Bc4 which you played, so its all good.

I was contemplating heading for a four knights game but that opening is way to complex for me even though I am an e4 player and should know at least some of its theory.

3.f4 is a good move when black has played 2... Nc6 instead of 2... Nf6, since now he doesn't have 3... d5 and 4... Nxe4 as in the line I gave earlier, so it transposes into a kind of King's Gambit.

I probably wouldn't play it because what would be the point when I could just play 2.f4 if I wanted that kind of game. I can see why people would do that though.

Well the point of 2. Nc3 first is that it avoids the Meran counter gambit: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5. Playing 3. f4 is just one way to play the Vienna though, and by no means the only way. The Vienna is a pretty flexible opening.

That was one of the reasons and also to get the opponent out of their comfort zone is the other.

You are talking absolute nonsense (as usually).

The Vienna game is really harmless opening in white have no chance to get advantage if black does not play too careless

In your game you did chose really harmless line - 5.Qxe5+ (5.Bb3 is moe challenging) and you could win only due to stupid moves made by opponent - 7....c5? (instead of 7...c6 or 7...Nf5 with equality) and 13...Rd8??? (instead of 13...Bd8).

Well, I could just say that the latvian gambit is harmless but I won't.

Edit: I think I dealt with those errors properly or was there a better move I could have played? Since you seem to know so much about this opening I will find a different one.

I don`t think that your knowledge of Latvian gambit allows you to make any claims about it.

Your opponent did not create any problems for you so you could win simply playing natural moves. Against stronger opponents (who won`t make such a stupid mistakes) you should be able to create problems for them.

thanks for the advice! 🙂

and thats why I didn't say it was harmless as I have only played in that opening 14 times now with only one of those coming on this site(so far I haven't lost with it or against it)

There may be valid reasons for playing the Vienna (I've played it myself on occasion), but to avoid the Latvian Gambit!??

If I was playing Korch I would play almost any move to avoid a latvian gambit game.(actually I would probably let him play it so I could see what he plays when he goes out of book and then play that against someone else)

I agree that it would not be good reason, because also in Latvian gambit white can just play safe, but without opening advantage (like in Vienna).
