I also timed him out but I don't feel bad about it. He just stopped moving about three weeks ago, no message, and I have many other games to play. I also don't believe his vacation sign was up before.

The games were playing well I'd love to have finished them out but because of the massive timeouts his rating has dropped to 1258 and it's just not the same anymore.

You're right. His vacation sign hasn't been up long. And yes, his rating has dropped. I suppose that means when I win my game against him on time my rating will drop further.

I'm getting tired of this. With each game I win on this site my rating suffers.

Probably the inspiration of Mary Kate's song "Good stuff, bad stuff, going down in Maryland."

It doesn't once you have played 20 games and have a nonprovisional rating. Of course to get there in any decent amount of time you would have to play more than two games at once.

I'm in no rush, and don't see that I should have to be simply in order to escape an unfair rating system.

How is it unfair?

If for example the standard rating system started from the first game the most you could gain in a single game would be 32 points. That means at a maximum you could be rated 1456 (assuming you won all your games against high enough rated players) after your 8 completed games.

That's the reason the provisional system is there. So that you can get to a reasonable approximation of your rating quickly rather than labouring for hundreds of games.

And for all that who really cares about rating anyway?

I felt kinda bad, but then again he was rated near 1900 and I was rated near 1580 and I felt like he should have just whipped me quick and been done with it.
In the first game he had no vacation flag up and I had a timeout for a day or so when I took it. In the second game he had a vacation flag up but no explanation of where or when he is coming back. I felt kinda bad but kinda relieved that my torture session was over so soon.

Discuss.
I timed him out too. But I don't feel so bad as there was no vacation flag or explaination, and I was probably winning. Just so you don't feel alone...

At the beginning of the thread, someone mentions those 1/o games and 3/o games. I have played a few of them and was time-out because of computer problems or server problems. That's why I believe the time bank of 3 days is reasonable. When computer or server are down, one cannot tell the opponent obviously. Surely I am not the only one to whom this happened!

Looking and thinking are not the same thing.
