ICC seems to have less players than PlayChess. In addition the competition seems to be easier than that at PlayChess. I registered on the 7 day trial and after walloping 7 different opponents I'm 2107 not like some clown here who padded his way to a 2200 PlayChess rating in 13 games.

Who here plays at ICC and what are their nicks?

I play on ICC. Not because I like it better than the alternatives. It's just what I've gotten used to. I find the competition (level of play) to be pretty good. My rating for 20 min games is about the same as it is on here. Blitz is much much lower.

My ICC handle is rbmorris (just like here). If anyone wants a game, add me to your notify list.

P.S. The 7-day trial is actually 14 days. (They don't tell you that.)

I'm wormwood on ICC as well.

z00t, did you try the special 5-minute pool already? you can start a 5-min game by typing '5-minute' in the main console. it has it's separate rating from regular blitz (even if you started a similar 5 0 blitz game), and for some reason it seems the 5-minute players are 100-200 points tougher that in regular blitz. I'm guessing it's because new casual players don't necessarily know about it.

you also make an alias to make it even easier

+alias 5m 5-minute

I think. then just type '5m' when you want a 5-minute game.

I played as a guest once and the interface seemed a lot harder to use than Playchess'.

I don't like the interface on ICC or FICS for that matter. I don't know the commands and it's badly designed for new users. Playchess is really slick, though i found it difficult to get 20 minute games.

I too don't like ICC since it costs so much and has less features than PlayChess. There is no engine room meaning the playing hall is full of computers. Look at my screenshots of ICC http://rapidshare.com/files/29968500/z00t_icc.zip.html

cmsmaster must be out of his mind to abandon PlayChess and join ICC in the summer, even if he can get it half price.

Nice screenshot - just takes me to a registration page.

As far as I am concerned, the "Engine Room" at PC is completely useless. PC's full of idle people in the main Playing Hall anyway.

And it doesn't cost much for students - $30 a year is pretty good. No, I'm not out of my mind, I'm tired of PC nearly having a monopoly for a product that's overrated.

I asked the admins :-

Question :- Does the 7-day trial membership have limitations compared to those of full-membership? *Submitted to 27 volunteer administrators and helpers.

That means there are no playing restrictions for humans. Those blue dots you see for a 7-day trialist are the same for a full member. The actual humans on ICC are very few.

"Currently online: 2175 players, including 24 Grandmasters and 43 International Masters."

most people use the 5-minute & 1-minute pools, not the regular seeks.

you can check on the frontpage of ICC what the stats are right now.

Very few? You can't be serious. It's always at least 1,000.

I've just recently joined ICC but only because I couldn't use playchess from my MAC. wheras ICC had a reasonable interface for MAC users..it's taken a little while to get used to it I agree...I just practiced againstg the bots for a few games...

Anyway I find the mrspock lectures very informative. The ability to draw arrows on the board (not with MAC inetrface sadly - only from PC) and examine games (move back & forward) is good for instruction. There's also the opportunity to play IM's GM's etc in simuls...overall I'm very happy with it.

Yeah, ICC brought back the full trial. I've been using it - and it's awesome. I've sent out a 15-0 and 4 3-0 games - all of which were responded to IMMEDIATELY by opponents, who played quite well. I also didn't lose the game when I disced. by accident - something that drives me nuts on PC. I'm really liking ICC.

What annoys me most about ICC is that you are required to type all these commands like you are a Unix programmer. Perhaps that guy who ran away to start FICS should have stayed or something. Look at the PlayChess client - sheer beauty and class.
