Anyone want to share a completely bizarre game here? Improbable victories, etc.
My personal favorite, offline, that I sadly didn't write down, was a victory against a slightly better player. I foolishly let him get an early check in with a knight. Like, in the opening. (oops) In complete vexation, I decided since I didn't to castle, I would get some use out of it. So I attacked with it. Starting at like move 7. I ended up pushing it all the way to the seventh rank, almost unsupported, actually winning a couple of pieces with it, and ended up with the game. Only got away with it because of the sheer absurdity of the thing, I expect. Poor guy didn't know how to respond.
Game 319090
That's me against my leader, jcandance, in an unrated game. I believe 1...c5 here is called the Birmingham Gambit. Nothing spectacular about the game for the most part. Around move 19 I start having trouble keeping track of my pawns 😳
However, the opening is bizarre. I remember being delighted by its oddity. Black makes three pawn moves and then four Queen moves, that fourth being to exchange Queens. In the meantime, White's made his first four moves with pawns and his first piece developed is also the Queen! Shocking disregard for established opening principles! 🙂
I love the position after Black's third move. After the early opening the game isn't too strange, but I felt those first few moves qualified it for inclusion in this thread.
About two years ago I played a game of chess at about 3 a.m. at a sauna-party that was quieting down. I was a slightly stronger player than my opponent, a good friend of mine (we were both probably somewhere between 1300-1400 at the time), but he had a definite advantage on the account of the fact that he was driving and thus sober, while I had had several beers and a few shots of whiskey during the evening. I wasn't really drunk, but of diminished capacity to be sure. I also poured me a shot of fine Scotch single malt to go with the game. 🙂 I played white.
I started as could be expected, by first blundering away my kingside rook. Instead of trying to fight for it in vain, I decided to get my king to safety on the queenside. Consequently I found myself in a not too bad position after all - his queen and dark square bishop were out of position to theaten my king in any way, and I was able to tie them down on the kingside so that he'd have to expend at least a couple of moves to get his queen back into play. His king was rather exposed in the center, so I mobilized most of my remaining forces in a quick attack. Then I blundered away one of the attacking pieces - my knight. I moved it to a square where it could be freely taken by the enemy knight. 😕
However, after thinking about how to continue the attack for a long while, I noticed that by sheer luck, the move that immediately lost the knight just happened to be the first move in a brilliant sacrificial attack that I would never have found (even if I was sober) on purpose. I ended the game in a spectacular check mate. 😀
We had a couple of friends watching, so my opponent wasn't allowed to live it down for quite a while.... 🙂
I'm just sorry that we didn't take the moves down, and I can't remember the game in any detail beyond what I've just explained. Anyway, I think that one certainly qualifies for this thread!
Also, for a truly insane game, go visit the link I gave in the "An awesome game - enjoy!" thread... but you've got to hurry - the game featured on the site changes every Wednesday.
