Especially recently, I've found that I blow won positions over and over simply because I get sloppy. I play mechanical moves without much thought, occasionally blundering. I've gone up 2-5 pawns in a few games recently and blown it every time.
I think the experience itself is making me play more carefully, but it's still a scary thought.

Any advice?

This happens to me sometimes... I think in order to overcome this you need to be more systematic in your analysis of the position.

Oh, you mean the set a stopwatch and stare technique isn't a good choice? 😉

Treat every point in the game equally, winning or losing, all that matters is the good move, keep a clear head always. If you get a couple of pieces up, don't let it go to your head, remember it means your opponent is being cornered, and they will be most dangerous at this time.

1213 Rating, So of course ignore me. 🙄

Just use the same technique I used when I played you...look for what the other side is doing and refute it...I need to think like that in all my games -.-

I still look at that game every day. Absolutely amazing. At least 2 mate threats, a queen trap, and bishop trap, a pawn trap... That's all the tactics I tried to smother you with that you saved (that I've counted so far)...
I should post the game on this thread just out of awe.

Edit - I forgot to demand a rematch... I'll send you a game over as soon as we both have a free spot.

Was I right for not taking that rook? I need someone to run that game in an engine

I remember analyzing that in game.. Not taking that rook on move 16 lead to a forced draw I believe.. after Qe8+ or something... might have been the rook.

I just ran it through crafty.. You had to take the knight.

yah I just did a 5 min. search on crafty. taking the rook = 4.5 pawn defecit for you, you lose your queen.

And you still owe me a rematch 😉

I would be tempted to say that you were right for not capturing the rook, because you won the game! But seriously, I did run the game in an engine, and capturing the rook would have been a stronger move.

Re8+ after taking the rook causes a lot of problems.. crafty gives a full 3 pawn advantage to white after taking the knight.. and a 4 pawn defecit for taking the rook on move 16.

I know it is obvious what I said... but if you find yourself losing won games then there is something you are missing so if you become more systematic you might not miss those things.

simple, but effective.

It is what I have to do in order to break 1600.

If you wanna break 1600 play me. Give me a queen advantage and I'll blow it immediately, your rating will skyrocket 🙂
