to learn the different openings, gambits and defenses?
I follow similar thinking all the way through, I don't learn the Najdorf because I play the Dragon. I don't learn the Nimzo-Indian because I play the Catalan etc.
In my chosen openings I know my favourite lines very deep (15-20 moves for some parts of the Dragon) and other I only know general principles (side lines and less played alternatives).
Of course none of this matters on RHP because databases and opening books are allowed meaning I can research if I don't know a given opening position.
EDIT: Knowing the ideas behind an opening is still of great use (say the Rxc3 exchange sac in the Dragon) so that you can call on them once the position is out of your database (if the opponent plays a suboptimal move early).
