Pwned.
using books to study openings and then applying it to games works better

Pawned.

In all seriousness though, I see the point but I consider using books and websites and tablebases if not cheating, then just cheesy. But I get it so to each their own. If thats your thing go with it.

Well, the difficulty arises (which is what was in debate before) is that even one game on here can last for weeks or months.

Lets say this game is the Ruy Lopez. In that length of time, would it be reasonable to expect the players of this game to not read any chess books which mention the Ruy Lopez while this game is in progress? Any reading of these books during the game will assist in this game.

Therefore it isn't practical to enforce a rule which stops players reading books which can assist in games on here. If you have several games in progress all with different openings, that is going to rule out reading a lot of chess books!

It would be a good excuse for not reading chess books.

once you've started making up random rules for yourself, how about one that makes it forbidden to pin pieces? I've always considered that to be especially cheesy.

I do have rules for myself to prevent lameness. We all can't be naturally cool enough to proclaim ourselves "sardonically evil."

Man I'm so sarcastic and so dark... I'm cool as hell.... *whips on sunglasses and hits f5 to refresh chess forums*
watch this troll hehehe...

when you get to a certain age you don't worry about being cool anymore. 'sardonically evil' comes from evil sardines btw, so it's pretty far from trying to appear cool anyway.

Yeah, it doesn't matter if people use books or not. Maybe I'll start doing it to. Who cares. I changed my mind.

Edit- sorry for trying to burn you Evil. Actually, I'd probably pick a name and avatar like yours anyway.
