this position came up in one of my blitz matches

I was wondering if Nxe5 here would be sound

It looks a bit iffy, but i always felt as if I would be able to follow it up with something.

I ended up being boring and not playing the sac but i'm just interested

1. Nxe5 Qe7?!

Also simply accepting the sacrifice 1. Nxe5 fxe5 2. Qh5+ g6 3. Qxe5+ Qe7 4. Qxh8 Qxe4+ 5. Be2 (5. Kd1? Bg4+) Qxg2 6. Rf1 Ne7 should be quite OK for Black. I wouldn't go for it.

This is a different position

In your case, black's d-pawn is still there

Also, in this case, white's e-pawn is swapped with a knight

In your case it is perfectly fine to take the pawn, as you show in your game.

That fact kinda triggered my idea of also doing the same here

i'm thinking
5. Kd1 Bg4+
6. f3 Bxf3+
7. gxf3 Qxf3+
8. Ke1 Qxh1
9. Qxg8

Black here can get a draw by perpetual but i don't see much else. As soon as black's attack (with a lone queen) ends, white's queen starts to move around and at least can come back to defend

Black has a reasonable plus after Qe4+ Kd1 Nd7. Nxe5 misses "the bite".
