I've been on this site for a year and I've never had a problem with adware from this site and I have MacAfee monitoring software actively running scans.

Of course, Russ could be secretly infiltrating my computer and stealing all my personal data for his own perverted use, but then I'm not very interesting so he's welcome to it.

No, it isn't, it's completely safe. 🙂

RHP is completely clean. Don't worry about that.

Try ad-aware to get rid of the pop-ups:

I was in a similar situation to yourself only about a month ago and had the same problem with rhp, whereby I kept on getting popups.
I therefore took it along to my local computer engineers to look at the
problem.
Like the other guys say, rhp is against popups and spyware. But, because the bugs had got so deep into my system, it takes literally hours, not days, the rhp site simply could not cope with the onslaught
of the viruses and spyware that I had inadvertently downloaded.
I was told that this had been due to OTHER sites that I had been into
(although I knew this myself anyway). All they could do was to wipe my computer completely clean of absolutely everything, they nuked the system and put everything back on using windows drivers.
Unfortunately the unwanted infections had destroyed some system files when the guy attempted to reinstall everything and my computer could not be saved, so I had to get a new one.
After running spybot (which is a superb program and free on the internet), he found over 1000 infections and spyware!

Can I just say that I recommend the following:

1/ download and install spybot immmediately
2/ If this doesn't work take to a computer engineer
3/ If he says that your computer is dead, get a new machine-
install spybot, norton internet security 2004 (which can not only record and stop all infections/spyware problems, but give you the full ip address of where they came from!) and download your windows updates, which, again have strong anti-virus/anti spyware capabilities.

Hope this helps!

If the engineer says your computer is dead, I would get a second opinion, as there is no way that spyware or any other installed program can "destroy" your computer as it would not withstand a low level format of your hard drive. The only way your computer can die is if there is a hardware fault imho.

Cheers,
Richard.🙂

o.k dead might be too strong a word, but, my computer was a second hand machine (about 10 years old) and missing some system files and failed to reinstall windows. I therefore thought better of it and bought a new one. I would only have had to pay to continually get it repaired and now I have a faster, better and more reliable system.

I would have to agree there. Spyware/adware/viruses/trojans in the end is all just software. Wiping the hard drive is like a complete clean slate. There is no way that the hardware can be changed.

What is likely is the engineer just ran some standard recovery CD which didn't format the drive, but reinstalled the operating system on top of it. This does not get rid of all the bugs. What you really need to do is have the drive completely formatted and the operating system reinstalled from scratch. If the hard drive does get damaged in some way (which would not be caused by bugs anyway), then it is just a case of replacing that hard drive and your PC would be as good as new. These days PCs are modular, all you need to do is replace the faulty hardware. Replacing the entire machine isn't very good advice.

Have you still got your old computer? Hopefully you haven't thrown it away. If you haven't, then I will have it. 😉

I fail to see how this is related to only chess.

Actually, I realised that until I noticed that the thread was recreated here after I had posted:

Although I think the majority go to the "Only Chess" forum first so I figure people are most likely to respond here.
