Fischer was a great talent, and clearly the best player in the world for at least 5 years. I could be persuaded to place him in the top 5 of all time even though I didn't like him. There was little room in Bobby Fischer's life for anyone but Bobby Fischer, and I can't remember him ever bothering to help anyone, or even speak a kind word about them. He was kind of a jerk.

Spassky defeated Petrosian for the championship (on his second try). That was no mean feat; Petrosian was an extraordinarily difficult player to defeat.
