Is it possible to win the endgame with the king/knight combo vs. king/rook?

Thanks in advance.

As I understand it it's a draw, but an easy one to mess up - you have to keep your knight close to your king - I managed to hold it in this game: Game 940176.

Thank you DT. I shouldn't look at your game until I finish the one I'm in. I was curious if even a draw was possible.

Of course a draw is possible.

The king/rook could win.

The king/knights best hope is a draw.

Matings not possible with a king/knight.

you can win with king+2 knights against a king and another piece.

Yes.

I meant king/knight (singular).

But your opponet would be a real knucklehead to let you checkmate him with king and 2 knights.

The side with the king and knight could win if the opponent cooperates. With one side's king in the corner, and his rook next to it. The other side has his king opposite his opponent's, and checkmates with the knight.

I suppose I should have been clearer.

In a normal game, where you and your opponet are playing to win, a King with a SINGLE knight cannot FORCE checkmate.

Yes, if some patzer GIVES him the game a king/knight combo can defeat a king/rook or lesser piece combo.

That being said, a king/knight cannot force mate on a solo king no matter how hard you and your opponet try. 😛
